QuiltCon

Pittsburgh Modern Quilt Guild’s Submission to QuiltCon’s 2024 Community Quilt Category.

Proceeds from the sale of this quilt will be donated to the Pittsburgh Children’s Home.

As I’ve shared previously, I know more about fabric and fashion than most men.  My grandmother was a seamstress who made wedding dresses for the elite of New York City in the early 1900s.  My mother made clothes for my sister and herself.  My daughter has a degree in Fashion Design and has owned and operated several successful boutiques.  And my wife is a knitter and a quilter.

So, I wasn’t at all surprised when my wife asked me to accompany her to QuiltCon, the largest modern quilting event in the world, that was held in Raleigh, NC last month.  While she might have been a bit surprised when I said that I would join her, I didn’t do so begrudgingly.  In fact, I’m always intrigued by the amount of time and attention to detail that goes into the design and construction of these works of art, and my time at QuiltCon only reinforced this realization for me.

While my wife didn’t have an entry into this year’s show, The Pittsburgh Modern Quilt Guild of which she is a member, did submit an entry that she and other members of the guild contributed to.  In what is called the Community Outreach Category, guilds from around the world were given the same four distinct colors from a color palette with instructions to make a quilt of a certain size.  The result ended up being a stunning display of dozens of quilts all representing distinctive themes. The quilts were all submitted and displayed at QuiltCon after which they will either be sold or donated to local non-profits in the community where they originated with the proceeds going to charity.

In addition to the quilt featured at the top of this article, here are some other entries from Community Outreach Category.
