On a recent trip to California my wife and I came across an outdoor function taking place on the grounds of the hotel in which we were staying.  Due to the elaborate setting and the attire of the guests, we thought we had stumbled upon a wedding reception. Then we noticed a sign that piqued our curiosity which read, “Maya’s – 100-Day Celebration”.

After doing some research I learned that a 100-Day Celebration is a traditional party, primarily in Korean and Chinese cultures, to honor a baby's first 100 days of life. Historically, the celebration marked the baby's successful survival through a vulnerable period.  Today it serves to introduce the baby to family and friends and to bless the child with a prosperous future. Celebrations often include feasting, gift-giving, and unique rituals aimed at ensuring the baby's long life and good fortune.

Here's some additional information about the significance and history of this tradition.

In the past, reaching 100 days was a critical survival achievement due to high infant mortality rates. The celebration marks this important milestone and offers good wishes for the baby's future.

The celebration is a chance to formally introduce the baby to family and friends.

In the culture where this is practiced, a number of traditions take place to “bless” the baby, such as “combing their hair to smooth their life path” or, “placing their foot on a turtle to symbolize a long life”.

Special foods like red eggs or rice cakes are often shared, sometimes with a specific number of people to represent the milestone.

Guests often bring gifts like red envelopes, gold, or other tokens to bless the baby.

Celebrations can be informal family gatherings at home or more formal events at a catered venue.

The 100-day mark is often a good time for celebrations because the mother is typically recovered, and the baby may have a more predictable sleep routine.

Some modern celebrations may include creating a handprint or footprint keepsake or showing a video of the baby's birth.
