On a recent trip to Europe, my wife and I visited the Salzburg area.  Even though it rained our entire time there, we made the most of our visit to this wonderful, picturesque part of Europe.

One of the highlights of our trip was an excursion to the Kehlsteinhaus (Eagle's Nest) situated atop the Kehlstein, a rocky promontory above the towns of Obersalzberg near Berchtesgaden, in southwestern Germany.

Completed in 1938, it was commissioned by the Nazi Party for official and social functions and was visited by Adolf Hitler on at least fourteen documented occasions.

Today, the Kehlsteinhaus operates seasonally as a restaurant, beer garden, and tourist destination.

The views to and from the summit of the Kehlstein are breathtakingly spectacular.  One can’t but marvel at the architectural achievement in constructing this facility on a ridge atop the Kehlstein, a 6,017 ft. subpeak of the Hoher Göll that rises above the town of Berchtesgaden.

However, this area and much of Europe is filled with stark reminders of the impact World War II had on our entire world.

More information on the construction and the history of the Eagle’s Nest can be found at: https://www.kehlsteinhaus.de/english/
