Those of you who follow golf will know that Rory McIroy won the Masters (one of the four major golf tournaments) in April of this year making him the sixth person (Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods being the others) to achieve the Grand Slam, golf’s most lofty accomplishment.

This past Sunday, the world top ranked golfer, Scottie Scheffler won his fourth major tournament (two Masters, the PGA Championship and The Open Championship) leaving only one more notch needed in his belt (the U. S. Open) to be the seventh golfer to complete the career grand slam.

As wonderful and impressive a golfer that Scheffler is, there is another factor that was brought to the forefront this week during Scheffler’s remarks before and after the Open Championship.

It surprised many to learn from Scheffler in some very candid comments that, while he’s very good at golf, it’s not the most important thing in his life.  In fact, according to Scheffler, the thrill of victory doesn’t last for long and is only minimally satisfying!

The media has made much of this admission and many articles have been written about Scheffler’s perspective on golf and life.  A link to one of these articles from the NY Post https://nypost.com/2025/07/17/sports/scottie-schefflers-grounded-perspective-resonates-with-golfing-peers/

What’s most impressive to me, however, is that through his candor, Scheffler reminds us that, regardless of our chosen field, there is more to life than career success.  A unique perspective from the world’s best golfer, that serves as a wonderful reminder to the rest of us no matter what our field of endeavor may be.
