Fathers and Sons

Writer: Leigh GerstenbergerLeigh Gerstenberger

The relationships between parents and children, while always special, can evoke all kinds of feelings and memories. For me, having lost my father when I was eighteen, I’m often wistful when I think about the times we had together. At the same time, I occasionally have regrets of him never knowing my wife, my children, and my grandchildren.

Often, my emotions sneak up on me at the most unexpected times. This occurred recently while watching of all things, American Idol, when one of the contestants, eighteen-year-old Hawaiian, Iam Tongi performed a song inspired by his late father, Rodney, who gave Tongi his love for music.

Viewing this performance not only caused my emotions to well up but brought each of the judges to tears.

When you have seven and a half minutes to spare, take a moment and enjoy this special tribute from a son to his father.
